Slot canyons are more common in the San Rafael, Robbers Roost area southwest of Green River, about 90 minutes from Moab. A good one for beginners is Little Wild Horse Canyon near Goblin Valley. No guide is necessary. You're into the first slot within 15-20 minutes of hiking. Willis Creek Slot Canyon is the perfect complement to its fabulous canyon friends. With its trickling creek and gorgeous canyon walls, Willis Creek is the friend you almost forgot to invite but turns out to be the life of the party. The trail starts out through brush and trees, then takes a turn down toward Willis Creek. SGR Canyon, aka S#@! Got Real Canyon, is a very different type of canyon than any other canyon I have done in Moab. The canyon is a physical day of elevation gain, route finding, high stemming, and rappels, very unique for Moab. Of the people that I know who have done it, comments have ranged from 'amazing!'
One of the most beautiful hikes I have been on in a long time. Join us as we walk in over five miles through a magnificent desert slot canyon and the nature that created it. Mary Jane's slot canyon. In the Staircase Escalante National Recreation Monument in Utah. This area is known for its many canyons and open landscape. But also for its many slot canyons. We visited three of the slot canyons, each of them special in its own way. These three slots can all be reached in one moderate hike. Peek-a-Boo Gulch Dry Fork Narrows.
The Needles forms the southeast corner of Canyonlands and was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area. Hiking trails offer many opportunities for long day hikes and overnight trips. Foot trails and four-wheel-drive roads lead to such features as Tower Ruin, Confluence Overlook, Elephant Hill, the Joint Trail, and Chesler Park.
Location
On US 191, drive 40 miles (60 km) south of Moab or 14 miles (22 km) north of Monticello, then take UT 211 roughly 35 miles (56 km) west. UT 211 ends in The Needles, and is the only paved road leading in and out of the area.
We strongly recommend using a map to reach The Needles. GPS units frequently lead people astray.
Visitor Center
The Needles Visitor Center is open daily, spring through fall. Hours vary by season. Features include: exhibits, book and map sales, backcountry permits, picnic area, general information, wireless internet, and park rangers on duty. You can also watch a park orientation video. Water is available at the visitor center year-round. Electric outlets are not available.
